A Pig in Sh-

Last Saturday was the Mets first Old Timers' Day since 1994. There was lots of build-up and excitement and anticipation for this event from the fans. Watching a melding of Mets players from different eras (and different uniform styles) coming together as one (all wearing the Swoosh-branded modern day/traditional uniform), I felt like a pig in shit. That was first how I thought it might have felt for emcee Howie Rose, who grew up as a Mets fan starting from Day 1 of the franchise and has been covering them for more than half of their history. After the exhibition game was complete, that's how I felt too.

These were the different eras of my Mets fandom, as well as the "pre-historical" times, coming together on the same field. This was my childhood and my adulthood and the history lessons all coming back to life. Doc Gooden was back on the mound in Queens. Steve Henderson (who I'm told played for the Mets in the "dead" era of the late '70s) was in Right Field. Turk Wendell was back at third base. Wait - what? This was a seriously executed event that was just lots of fun to watch, and I'm sure even more fun to take part in for the players. I don't know if it was lack of roster depth, or some players just letting their personalities get the best of them, but pitchers Turk Wendell and Roger McDowell (two of the better personalities in Mets history) both played in the "field" (non-pitching positions) during the game. Because of course they did. McDowell even had a few RBIs.

I'm still having trouble decribing what was going through my mind watching the introduction of players and watching the game. For so many of these guys (save for the older ones that were always "Old Timers" to me), it still sort of feels like yesterday that they were active players in Mets uniforms, and here they are mixing together in different uniforms (even the most contemporary Mets didn't wear that Swoosh icon on the front when they played). I always think of different distinct eras (the late '80s when I grew up; the mid-90's when I was in high school; the Bobby V years when I was in and just out of college; the David Wright years; and the more modern days that somehow feel like so long ago, with the 2015 pennant). Here they were mixing together. It was weird seeing the 1986 Mets in uniforms lacking the iconic racing stripe. (Heck, at this point, it was weird seeing Ron Darling and Keith Hernandez in uniform and not in their SNY polo shirts and headsets.)

Was it a perfect day? No. As a Mets fan, I'm conditioned to expect things to be wrong. I can point to 10 things that were wrong, ranging from missing players to a warning light that illuminated my car as I was passing LaGuardia Airport on the way in. But given who was there and what the event was, it certainly was as close to perfect as Mets fans can accept. But a pig in shit is as close to perfect as one can get.

A Pennant Winning Call

Just getting my mindset ready for Opening Day, I present a breakdown of Howie Rose's (first) Pennant Winning call. I should note that Bob Murphy only got one of these and Gary Cohen only got one of these. I think Lindsey Nelson was lucky to have two. You never know how things will turn out, and Howie might only ever get this one.

Here it is, courtesy of wor710.com:

You can read WOR's recap of Game 4 against the Cubs and hear other highlights of the game here:

Let's break it down line-by-line. I tried to capture the inflections in Howie Rose's call with larger text and bold/bolder text.

Here's the payoff pitch from Familia...to Fowler. On the way.
So far, as basic radio call of a pitch. You can sense something in his voice that this is bigger than a 3rd inning pitch.

And it's...in there, strike three called!
The pause at the start of this line is because the umpire made a delayed call, thus not allowing Howie to say something right away. His voice rose quite a bit. But it's the nuts and bolts of a good radio call, to say what happened with the pitch.

The Mets win the Pennant!!!
Okay, this is getting serious. These are words that Howie Rose has probably dreamed of saying ever since he went into broadcasting. Punctuate the word "Pennant".

The New York Mets have won the National League Pennant!!
Clarify the situation. Probably a good idea. Just in case what he said before wasn't clear. Or just say it again because he can. And again, punctuate the word "Pennant".

Put it in the books!
His trademark phrase after a Mets victory. The moment was so big, it was the third thing he said after calling the final pitch. I wasn't sure if his inflection of this line was because he almost forgot to say it or he was questioning if what he's just seen and described was real.

The New York Mets, for the first time in 15 years, are champions of the National League. And they are mobbing each other out behind the pitchers mound. They have completed a 4 game sweep of the Chicago Cubs in the National League Championship Series. They win Game 4 eight-to-three. And now the disappointed crowd here at Wrigley Field begin to salute their Cubs, whose long streak, 70 years without a Pennant, and back to 1908 without a World Series, will continue. But all of the focus now on the New York Mets. They're headed to the World Series, against either Toronto or Kansas City, we won't know until at least Friday, and right now, Josh, I guarantee you, New York Mets don't care.
This is all good radio. There are no pictures and no graphics to show the final score, the series standings, the celebrations of both the Mets players and Cubs fans, or the upcoming schedule. So Howie needs to describe it all. Josh, who he refers to at the end, is his broadcast partner Josh Lewin.

Bob Murphy and the No Hitter

A thought went through my head in the few days since Johan Santana pitched the first No Hitter in Mets history. We heard Howie Rose's call on WFAN. We heard Gary Cohen's call on SNY. They are holding down the fort as the voices of the Mets.

Howie Rose's call on WFAN with Jim Duquette

Gary Cohen's call on SNY with Ron Darling and Keith Hernandez

On Monday, I suggested that Santana appear on Kiner's Korner.

And today, I want to think about the man that I call "forever the voice of the Mets", Bob Murphy. Bob Murphy was an original Mets broadcaster in 1962. He wasn't the "network guy". He wasn't the "All-Star Player". He was the voice of the Mets for a couple of generations, until his retirement after the 2003 season. We lost him in August 2004. He was known as a "homer", a broadcaster (in fact, a Hall of Fame broadcaster), but one who rooted for the team which he called.

So how would Bob Murhpy have called the last out of Santana's no hitter? For argument's sake, let's put him on WFAN with his old partner Gary Cohen. That's how I grew up listening to the Mets, and that's where he was when he retired. This is how I think it would have sounded (you'll have to meet me half way and imagine his voice and emphasis saying these words). If you remember Bob Murphy, you remember the emphasis that he put on certain words and certain parts of words, so I am attempting to capture that with capital letters and extra letters.

now the crowd standing, roaring as loud as they can.
three and two, here's the pitch.
swing and a miss. STRIKEEE THREEEE! STRIKEE THREE!
it's all over, the mets win it!
JOHAN SANTANA HAS THROWN A NO HITTER!
the first one by a METS pitcher.
they're all racing towards the mound, MOBBING Johan Santana.
they had gone over fifty years without one, and now a mets pitcher has thrown a NO hitter.
and we'll be back with the very happy recap in just a moment!

Especially here, feedback and alternate suggestions are welcome.

Eighty Twenty

I hope this is coherent. After all, a Mets pitcher has thrown a No Hitter.

It had to be Jo(han)! It had to be Jo(han)! He's the ace. He's coming back after more than a year off. He stepped it up tonight. Johan Santana threw a Mets No Hitter. His second straight complete game shutout. He's the guy who led us to the final day in the 2008 season with a win in the penultimate game at Shea...pitching that day with a bum knee and carrying the team on his back. That was known as "The Santana Game". Now he's thrown a No Hitter.

It was something that I could feel around the 7th inning when I put the game back on. I saw periodic updates with no hits, but I learned years ago not to get my hopes up. After the Baxter catch, I could feel it. I've always imagined how I'd react to it (with tears). In reality, I started breathing heavier and heavier starting in the 8th inning. So much that I couldn't take a phone call after the game ended. It was more hyperventilating than tears, but plenty of disbelief.

I thought I had jumped the gun a bit by starting to record on the DVR in the middle of the 7th. I recorded SNY for 2 1/2 hours. I'll record that to the computer later. Maybe I'll re-record the entire game when SNY replays it. That's a DVD for sure. In the 8th, I got out my audio recording equipment to record the broadcast on WFAN (for some reason, I pay for MLB.TV on the internet, and I have some basic wires and plugs in my laptop that lets me record audio). I recorded for about half an hour starting in the middle of the 9th and going until Howie signed off the game broadcast and switched to Mets Extra (when the MLB.TV audio shut off). I hope I can get Mets Extra later, even though I caught part of it on WFAN.com's live stream. I already uploaded the audio of the last batter from my recording. I saw that others have also.

It seems like a dream. Even though I'm watching the re-run of SportsNite on SNY, where they cover this and talk about it and I'm still reading Facebook statuses and tweets.

Howie Rose on WFAN and Gary Cohen on SNY both nailed it with their respective calls of the final out. Both were different. Both were right for their respective media (Howie on radio, Gary on TV). Both, I think, had some level of emotion in their calls. Both are lifetime Mets fans working in what some would call a "dream job" as a Voice of the Mets. I'm glad both were there tonight to make the call.

I can't wait to hear the beginning of tomorrow's respective broadcasts at around 4pm (WFAN for the radio and WPIX for the TV). I can't wait to hear Josh Lewin's remarks when he returns from his family weekend (there was a graduation in his family, so that lifelong Mets fan new to the club's broadcasts missed one of the greatest Mets games ever. I can't wait to hear the first interview with George Thomas Seaver ("The Franchise"), whenever that will be. I dreamed that this moment happened while I was at his winery and I could break the news to him.

I still don't believe it. Let's see what tomorrow brings.

LET'S GO METS!

A little rule

A few years ago, I came up with a little rule regarding the "Voices of the Mets" and No Hitters. It goes like this...

At any given time in Mets history, there are either 2 or 3 designated "Voices of the Mets", and at least one of them has to be broadcasting every Mets game (not necessarily every batter, but one of them has to be there) just in case there is a No Hitter thrown. It's a very exclusive club.

Bob Murphy, Ralph Kiner, and Lindsey Nelson were the original voices of the Mets. Lindsey Nelson left in the late '70s, and there were just 2. When Ralph Kiner stopped doing play-by-play after the 1997 season, Gary Cohen was elevated (yes, he had been there for 9 season already...it's not automatic except for the originals) to that status in 1998. Bob Murphy retired after the 2003 season and Howie Rose was elevated in 2004. There is no real rule that the "voices of the Mets" have to be radio broadcasters, but it's worked out that way. Gary Cohen moved to TV in 2006, but it's still Gary and Howie.

So as it stands today, we can't allow both Gary and Howie to be off for the same game, because what would happen if there was a No Hitter? I don't mind Josh Lewin, but look at last year when a lot of people didn't like Wayne Hagin, and there's a lot of people who don't like FOX announcers, so what if Howie had a weekend off when FOX was broadcasting a game, and a No Hitter was thrown? Neither of the "Voices of the Mets" would be there.

Get the idea? OK.

So now it's happened, and both Gary Cohen (with Keith Hernandez and Ron Darling on SNY) and Howie Rose (with Jim Duquette on WFAN) were broadcasting the game, just like it should be. It would have been a damn shame for either of them to miss it (sorry Josh Lewin).

Mets 2012 predictions

The new year 2012 is upon us, and I have a few predictions for the Mets for this year.
  1. I will not win the Banner Day competition, but I will have lots of fun creating a banner and participating. And that's what it's all about.
  2. The Sterling Equities partners will no longer control the New York Mets (by year's end). They will not get enough investors to loan them money in exchange for usage of Mr. Met and a Citi Field parking space (which I heard is actually only good when Citi Field's lot is used as a park-and-ride lot). They will have to pay more money than they can afford in Bernie Madoff-related lawsuits. And other owners in MLB will force Bud Selig's hand over the liquidity issues and loans from MLB that they'll basically kick Fred Wilpon out of the club. Sterling Equities real estate will also crumble over the weight of what Fred Wilpon will owe (remember, separate from the Mets, they made money from Madoff that will have to be given back).
  3. The 2013 MLB All Star Game will not be awarded to Citi Field. Same with the 2014 game or the 2015 game. It won't be awarded until new ownership is firmly in place, though I expect to see it as something thrown into the pot for a new owner (sort of like how the Astros deal had a condition on them moving to the AL West).
  4. The Mets will have a bad product on the field in 2012. It won't be fun to watch. And attendance will dip, again. That will cause the Mets to lose $100 million in 2012. It's kind of the opposite of "it takes money to make money".
  5. The most attended event at Citi Field will be a concert and not a sporting event.
  6. The NHL Winter Classic will not be at Citi Field in 2012 (or probably, ever). Reason - it's not Yankee Stadium. We just have to live with it.
  7. David Wright will be traded before the trade deadline.
  8. Johan Santana will be healthy enough to have trade talks centered around him during the season until a season ending injury (though it'll be something freak and mis-handled, and not related to any of the other injuries he's had with the Mets).
  9. R.A. Dickey will be the Mets representative at the All Star Game
  10. Howie Rose will be paired with Jim Duquette on WFAN. It should be fun to listen to.

Happy 2012 Mets fans! Mets 2012, rejuvenated at 50!

Can I audition for the vacant Mets radio gig?

Let me start by saying that Wayne Hagin is a nice guy. I met him during Spring Training 2008, at the very beginning of his Mets broadcasting career. He did nothing wrong during his 4 seasons in Flushing. He was himself. He was a solid #2 guy in the Mets radio booth.

I use past tense because the reports strongly indicate that WFAN is not going to renew his contract in 2012. I've seen a wide list of actual candidates and fan suggestions. Let me throw out some opinions about these guys and the job in general.

Howie Rose is your #1 radio announcer. There is no replacing that. In the 50 year history of the New York Mets, they have always had a rotation of at least 2 play-by-play announcers (a list that includes ex-player and HOFer Ralph Kiner as a play-by-play man). Two of the announcers auditioning are basically analysts. That would be an interesting shift, though some fans would welcome having Howie Rose call all 9 innings.

Let me throw this out there. SNY is not going to allow the team of Gary (Cohen), Keith (Hernandez), Ron (Darling), and Kevin (Burkhardt) get broken up. So we're not going to see the reunion of Howie and Gary. And as much as I would like this pairing, I don't think we're going to see Howie Rose with Kevin Burkhardt together.

One rumor is that Chris Carlin of SNY is in the mix. Personally, I don't like him on TV, and I won't like him on the radio (though it would get him off of Mets pre/post game shows). But, he does have radio play-by-play experience calling Rutgers Football and Men's Basketball (I've never actually listened to him, so I have no idea if he's any good). I do think we're better off leaving him at SNY.

Billy Sample is in the mix. He had a short playing career, and has had a long resume as a broadcaster/writer (according to Wikipedia). I vaguely remember him on Atlanta Braves broadcasts on TBS and I know he's been with MLB.com. As good as he may be, I'm not sure how well he would fit in on Mets broadcasts.

WFAN's Ed Coleman is another candidate. I can live with him as a fill-in on the radio broadcasts, but he's much better suited to be WFAN's Mets beat reporter.

Jim Duquette is another candidate. This is an interesting choice, and the one I think is most likely to happen (based on no real information). He's an ex-GM. He's an ex-Met GM. He traded Scott Kazmir. After that, I stopped reading his bio. But to be fair, I think he was a lame-duck GM after Steve Phillips was fired and before Omar Minaya came in. He currently co-hosts a show on an MLB satellite radio channel (to which, I don't subscribe). He has no known playing career, but I've never thought an analyst serves much purpose on the radio because you don't have replay (ok, they can "spot trends"). There's a reason why a lot of baseball teams have gone with 2 play-by-play men on the radio. I think bringing him in would be an interesting change in direction for Mets radio. Imagine the stories of the Mets front office that he could tell.

I wonder if one of the SNY kid-casters is now old enough to take the job. No matter what, Mets radio broadcasts will be different in year 51.

A Very Interesting Feat

I wrote this on this site's wall on facebook last night.
Kudos to Mets radio announcer Howie Rose for working 2 complete game broadcasts today - 2 games on 2 different medium for 2 different sports in 2 states in 1 day (Mets game in Queens on WFAN Radio and Islanders game in Newark on MSG+ TV). I'm sure it's a rare feat for a broadcaster if it's even been done before.
Today, it seems that Howie is at it again. With 2 fewer hours between start times of the games (last night's game was a 7pm faceoff and tonight's was a 5pm faceoff), but with fewer miles to drive (and no big bridges to cross), Howie once again was able to call the first 6 innings of today's Mets game on WFAN radio and then tonight's Islanders game (their season finale) on MSG PLUS television. Calling complete games at 3 different venues in 2 days, plus 2/3 of a 4th game in that time is quite a feat.

Incidently, this is the 3rd time that Howie has attempted this feat in this hockey season. On the afternoon of the Islanders' opener, which was the Saturday of the final weekend of last baseball season, Howie worked the Mets 1:10pm game but had to leave during the rain delay to get to the Colliseum in time to make whatever pregame work he had for the hockey game, then calling the Islanders opener that night. He was back at Citi Field the next day for the Mets season finale. I attempted the same feat those same days with the same 2 Mets games, used the same excuse for leaving early on Saturday, but with the Devils game in place of the Islanders game.

I don't know how common this is for broadcasters with potential schedule conflicts, but any time they can pull it off, it's worth noting, especially on back-to-back days. Nice job Howie.

I'm trying to make more of an effort to listen to Howie and Wayne on WFAN this year. They're too good of a team to be passing up. It's certainly nothing against Gary, Keith, and/or Ron. It's more like a parent who needs to show love to all of their children.

The season is almost over

As Coop reminded me in her recent post, it's hockey season already. Preseason hockey anyway. While that is a good thing, it also signals the end of the baseball season.

That means there's only a limited number of times to listen to Howie Rose and Wayne Hagin (especially if Howie leaves us a bit early to go back to his winter job with the Islanders) and a limited number of times to listen to Gary, Keith, and Ron (and Kevin and Ralph, especially Ralph since you just never know). And it means there's limited window to watching baseball, meaningful or not, before the Yankees playoff games are thrown in our faces.

Flashback Saturday

To borrow (and change) an expression from the blog Faith And Fear In Flushing, today is Flashback Saturday watching the Mets game.

Former Mets TV play-by-play man (and current Radio play-by-play man) Howie Rose is filling in on the FOX Sports telecast with former TV announcer Tim McCarver. The duo never worked together (like when FOX had Ralph Kiner visit the booth for an inning last year working with Tim McCarver), but it's both good and a bit strange to hear both familiar voices in places that I knew them when I was growing up.

Random Thoughts

While I start to get ready to write my mid-season review after today's game, I will share a few random thoughts. Forgive me if I've said these before.

  • If you're into hamburgers or cheeseburgers, get the double Shack burger at the Shake Shack. The ribs from Blue Smoke are good too. I tried a Brooklyn burger. Nothing special.

  • Most seats at Citi Field have some obstruction. MetsPolice.com on Tuesday will post a few of my pics from the first game of the St. Louis series from 2 weeks ago. LF seats, those damn plexiglass barriers and the rails blocked the parts LF that I could see, and the mere fact that those seats are closer to the field caused me to lose the view of the back half of LF and CF. But I could see RF for the first time after sitting down the RF line for 3 games, so that was good. Even the seats I was in for the last game against St. Louis had a slight obstruction from the plexiglass 11 rows back just off home plate in the Upper Deck.

  • Those patriotic hats weren't well thought out. Mets don't (yet) had red as a color, but they had the red hats. And playing the Phillies, red a primary color, also had the red hats. There are reasons why one team wears home white and the other road gray, or at the very least, both aren't wearing the same colored alternate jerseys. Remember the '86 playoffs when the Astros had white road jerseys? This weeked has been just as confusing.
But here's my solution for the hats (which I do see as a good idea if it were well thought out) -- Our country's colors are RED, WHITE, and BLUE! Find the color from that set that best matches the team's normal hat color, or at least an official team color, and use that as a base for the patriotic-looking team logo. Mets would wear a blue hat, and the Phillies would wear a red hat. Some teams would be a bit off color, but at least it wouldn't be the visual chaos that we saw in Philly.

  • I like Gary, Keith, and/or Ron, but I need to listen to Howie and Wayne more. Only on radio can he get away with a joke about having the Philly Phanatic smash ALL of the Mets black batting helmets after describing the Phanatic's usual antics.

  • (I think I've noted this before) Anyone think it's coincidence that last year's sing along "I'm A Believer" is missing this year? How many of you could say "I'm A Believer" when it comes to the Mets and not be kidding yourself?

program about Shea nominated for Emmy

It's true.

read it here on page 5 of the nomination press release.

A program called The Amazin' Shea that aired on WNBC-TV (in New York) on March 29, 2008, the eve of Shea's final season, was nominated for a New York Emmy award in the category of "News Special". It's up against a piece on Dr. Martin Luther King Jr's legacy and two (2) programs covering last year's Papal visit to New York and the other defunct ballpark.
