Mets Spring TV/Radio schedule

Based on data entered into MLB.com for the 15 Grapefruit League teams, this is the Mets TV/Radio schedule for Spring Training. As a matter of completeness, all games, including exhibition games, are listed. I list broadcasts from other teams as well as reference because they will be available to MLB.TV subscribers. Radio stations that are not WFAN belong to the other team.

read it here starting on the bottom of page 11 of the nomination press release.

Included in the list are programs related to Shea Goodbye, the 1969 Mets, and two thirds of the famed GaryKeithAndRon broadcasting team. Some non-Mets stuff on SNY made the list too.

Meet the Mets - Bob Costas edition

I saw this over on the blog MetsGuide and had to repost it (good find on your part Tom). Too good to pass up. It's a video clip from a webcast show that Bob Costas co-hosted for SportsIllustrated.com in 2006.

Bob Costas singing "Meet the Mets" and impersonating Lindsey Nelson.

Prime 9 - Best Broadcasters

I saw this tidbit on Neil Best's Watchdog blog getting around the newsday paywall.

MLB Network on Monday night will show an episode of Prime 9 featuring "A Countdown Show Featuring the All-Time Top 9 Greatest Baseball Broadcasters". It airs Monday night at 8:30pm on MLB Network.

Any bets if Fran Healy makes the list?

The last first anniversary at Shea

It was a year ago today that the walls came crumbling down for the last time at what was once Shea Stadum. This is how I marked the event last February 18
I just received word from the posters at baseball-fever.com that our beloved Shea Stadium has come down.

It came down around 11:25 am on February 18, 2009.

They've been posting pictures and video almost daily for at least a month of demolition. As a matter of principle, I look there but won't post any here (except for the day we all went to Shea a few Saturdays ago). But you can look.

Even wikipedia has been updated with the news of Shea's final pieces.

I also posted some pictures from some folks at baseball-fever.com, but I can't look at them right now.

Big Yellow Taxi, lyrics by Joni Mitchell
Look at the lyrics. You can take a lot of meaning from them here.

Mets Broadcasters at the Olympics

With this Winter Olympics starting this weekend, I decided to take a look anad see which past and present Mets broadcasters have worked at the Olympics. I found a few more than I had expected. It wouldn't surprise me if there was an omission from this list. If you don't want to do all that reading, head down to the bottom of the post for a few sound bytes from a current Mets announcer calling an Olympic sport.

  • Jiggs McDonald - Best known as a Hall of Fame Hockey broadcaster and voice of the Islanders on TV from 1980-81 through 1994-95, he called Mets games on SportsChannel in 1982.
He called Ice Hockey at the 1998 Calgary Winter Games for ABC and at the 1992 Albertville and 1994 Lillehammer Winter Games for TNT, and also Basketball for CTV in Canada at the 1992 Barcelona Summer Games.
  • Don Criqui - Known for his work calling NFL and College Football and College Basketball for NBC and CBS TV and Radio, he was listed as a fill in announcer for the Mets in 1991 (which I don't really remember, but have seen his name listed in some announcer lineups and it was noted in the NY Times).
He called play-by-play for Swimming at the 1988 Seoul Summer Games and Water Polo at the 1996 Atlanta Summer Games for NBC and hosted NBC's Olympics Triplecast PPV broadcast at the 1992 Barcelona Summer Games.
  • Kenny Albert - Best known for his work with the NFL and MLB on FOX and Rangers on the radio, he was a fill-in announcer for Bob Murphy during the summer of 2001 on WFAN.
He's called play-by-play for NBC's Olympic Ice Hockey coverage at the 2002 Salt Lake City, 2006 Turino, and he will reprise that roll at 2010 Vancouver Winter Games for NBC.
  • Ed Coleman, Mets fill-in announcer and host of Mets Extra on WFAN.
He "did some radio work" at the 1988 Seoul and 1992 Barcelona Summer Games for NBC Radio and the 1994 Lillehammer Winter Games for CBS Radio.
  • Howard Cosell - best known from his work on Monday Night Football and Boxing on ABC, he was actually the first pre-game host for the Mets Radio broadcasts in 1962 on WABC Radio.
He was part of ABC TV's Olympic coverage in the 1972 Munich Summer Games and called Boxing at the 1976 Montreal and 1984 Los Angeles Summer Games
  • Tim McCarver - Known at one point as the best analyst in Baseball, he's been a lead analyst for ABC, CBS, ABC again, and FOX and was a Mets broadcaster on WOR/WWOR and SportsChannel from 1983 to 1998.
As part of ABC Sports in the late '80s, he called Freestyle Skiing and served as a reporter at the 1988 Calgary Winter Games, and as part of CBS Sports the early '90s, he was a co-host of CBS's primetime coverage of the 1992 Albertville Winter Games
  • Gary Thorne - Best known as ESPN and ABC's lead NHL announcer, he was a Mets Radio announcer from 1985 to 1988 on WHN/WFAN and a Mets TV announcer on WWOR, WPIX, and FSN New York from 1994 to 2002.
He called Speed Skating for CBS at the 1998 Nagano Winter Games, Canoeing and Rowing for NBC at the 2000 Sydney Summer Games, and Ice Hockey for NBC at the 2002 Salt Lake City Winter Games.
  • Ted Robinson - Best known as the lead Tennis commentator for NBC and the Tennis Channel, he was a TV and Radio announcer for the Mets from 2002 to 2005 on WPIX, FSN New York, and WFAN.
He holds the record for past/present Mets broadcasters making his 7th Olympic broadcast appearance, having called Short Track Speed Skating, Freestyle Skiing, and Giant Slalom Snowboarding for CBS at the 1998 Nagano Winter Games, and for NBC, he called Baseball at the 2000 Sydney Summer Games, Short Track Speed Skating at the 2002 Salt Lake City and 2006 Turino Winter Games, Diving and Canoeing at the 2004 Athens Summer Games, Diving again at the 2008 Beijing Summer Games, and he will reprise his roll calling Short Track Speed Skating at the 2010 Vancouver Winter Games.
  • Gary Cohen - Best known for his work calling New York Mets baseball, he's been the TV voice of the Mets on SNY and WPIX since 2006 and was a voice of the Mets on WFAN from 1989 to 2005.
He called Ice Hockey for CBS Radio at the 1992 Albertville, 1994 Lillehammer, and 1998 Nagano Winter Games, including all 3 Gold Medal contests

Here are some sound bytes of Gary Cohen at the 1998 Winter Olympics.
A disclaimer. These broadcasts are probably the copyright of the IOC, USOC, CBS Radio and/or WFAN. I recorded them using an old fashioned walkman plugged into my computer in 1998, live, as the events happened.

2010 Mets Spring Training TV schedule

As official as anything posted on MLB.com gets (which I take to be the word of God), the Mets Spring Training TV schedule is out. I'll pull together a post with a composite TV/radio schedule for all Mets games that includes broadcasts from the other team for those of us with MLB.TV.

But here's the televised games available in NY:
Tue March 2 vs Atlanta (SNY)
Thu March 4 vs St. Louis (SNY)
Fri March 5 vs Florida (SNY)
Sun March 7 vs Washington (WPIX)
Tue March 9 vs Houston (SNY)
Thu March 11 vs Boston (SNY)
Sat March 13 vs Detroit (WPIX)
Mon March 15 vs St. Louis (SNY)
Fri March 19 vs Minnesota (SNY)
Tue March 23 vs Atlanta (SNY, ESPN)
Wed March 24 vs Houston (SNY)
Thu March 25 at St. Louis (ESPN)
Sat March 27 vs Washington (WPIX)

It looks like all home games/only home games on either SNY or WPIX, but they're moving the production trucks out for the last week of Spring Training, plus 2 games on ESPN.

Link: The ten stupid things new team owners do

Interesting article on ballparkdigest.com about "The ten stupid things new team owners do". I think it's focused on the minor leagues, but the principles hold true for the majors. Maybe someone can count down this list and see how many of these "don'ts" the Mets are guilty of.

Historic Dodgertown

Oh how I miss seeing games at Dodgertown. The Dodgers moved into the complex to bare their name in 1948 for Spring Training (they were still the Brooklyn Dodgers back then) and played their final game in the middle of the 2008 Spring Training season (they had a few exhibition games in China before the Bejing Summer Olympics and stayed in Arizona for the final week of Spring Training and officially moved to a new complex in Arizona the following season).

Mack from Mack's Mets stopped by the Dodgertown complex in Vero Beach a few weeks ago on his trip to Port St. Lucie. And he wrote about it and included some photos. I love how he starts the post - with a picture of one of the Dodgertown signs and the words "Couldn’t help myself.". Nice work Mack. A few pictures and words worth reading.

I hope when he goes back down in a couple weeks, he can get past the closed gates. It looks like he'll leave just before the start of a High School/College Baseball Invitational at the complex, brought to you by RussMatt Baseball.

I have the same plan as Mack for stopping by Dodgertown while I'm staying in Vero Beach later in March. I hope I can get in to see a game during one of my off nights.

Something out of Left Field

I just happened across tonight's edition of MLB Network's "Hot Stove" off-sesaon filler programming, and they showed what looks like a mini-series from their "Prime 9" show, the 9 greatest plays from Left Field.

On the list, they had a play made against the Mets (Kirk Gibson falling over backwards on the bad turf at Shea in the '88 NLCS Game 3), one made by a former Met (Kevin Mitchell's barehanded, reaching backwards catch at Busch Stadium in 1989 while playing for the Giants), and one by a Mets player.

"The Catch" (Endy Chavez) from the 2006 NLCS was voted number 1.

This is better than saying something about the thought of hearing "Hall of Famer" in front of Jon Miller's name every Sunday night this summer.

Incidently, looking at the recap of Game 3 from the 1988 NLCS (in which Gibson made that catch), that game looks like a candidate for a Mets Classic on SNY or an MLB Classic on MLB Network. I don't remember that series at all for some reason, but this was a Mets comeback win on a very sloppy field at Shea. It was also the game in which Dodgers reliver Jay Howell was ejected for keeping pine tar in his glove.
